Overcoming Imposter Syndrome: 3 Ways to Feel More Confident as a Yoga Teacher
Oct 06, 2025
If you’ve ever found yourself doubting whether you’re a “good enough” yoga teacher, you’re not alone. I started talking about this in my latest email — but I wanted to expand on it here because it’s something so many of us feel, even years into teaching.
That voice that says, “Who am I to teach this?” or “What if my students see through me?” — that’s imposter syndrome.
And it can creep in whether you’ve been teaching for two months or two decades.
Over time, I’ve learned that feeling confident as a yoga teacher isn’t about mastering every pose or memorizing every alignment cue — it’s about trusting yourself and staying connected to your purpose.
Here are three ways to start doing that today.
1. Reframe your role: You’re a guide, not a guru
You don’t need to have all the answers.
Your role isn’t to know everything — it’s to hold space for exploration.
When you shift from “I have to be perfect” to “I’m here to facilitate learning and awareness,” the pressure starts to soften.
Try this before your next class:
Take one deep breath and remind yourself, “I’m here to guide, not perform.”
2. Ground yourself mid-class
It’s easy to get lost in your head while teaching — worrying about what comes next or if your cues make sense.
When that happens, pause for one slow inhale and exhale.
Reconnect to your feet, your breath, and your presence.
The truth is, students don’t remember whether you said “step” or “place.” They remember how they felt in your class.
3. Keep a “teacher wins” journal
Start a note on your phone or a small notebook just for teaching wins.
Write down kind feedback, a breakthrough moment a student shared, or even a time you stayed calm when something went off-script.
Then, when imposter thoughts show up, flip through those pages.
They’ll remind you that you are growing, helping, and making a difference.
Ready to feel more confident in your cueing?
If imposter syndrome ever creeps in because you’re unsure what to say or how to say it, join me for my free Confident Cueing Workshop for Yoga Teachers.
You’ll learn how to:
-
Cue with clarity and confidence
-
Stop second-guessing yourself mid-class
-
Create smooth, intentional transitions
You don’t have to “get rid of” imposter syndrome completely — you just have to keep showing up, one class, one cue, one breath at a time.
You’re already doing the work.
This is just your reminder that you belong here. ❤︎
